Melissa Glim

Melissa Glim, M.P.H., is a science writer and healthcare communications professional working with NIH’s Intramural Research Program to promote the innovative research being done at the NIH’s 27 Institutes and Centers and the scientists who are making it happen. Melissa has written about topics from Alzheimer’s disease to women’s health, covering basic science to patient education to policy and advocacy.

She supports a variety of clients from government, non-profit, and industry in strategic communications planning and implementation, coalition and partnership building, stakeholder education and outreach, and health and science writing and materials development. She has developed and led grassroots programs for Hadassah and the National Coalition for Cancer Survivorship, spoken on stem cell research and cancer survivorship advocacy at numerous conferences, created a web-based advocacy training program, and contributed a chapter to the Oncology Nursing Society’s textbook, Cancer Rehabilitation and Survivorship: Transdisciplinary Approaches to Personalized Care. Melissa has won three National Health Information awards for her articles. She received her Master of Public Health in Community Health Education from Hunter College School of Public Health and her Bachelor of Science in Science Communication from Cornell University.

In her spare time, Melissa loves making hats and jewelry, swing dancing, and writing the occasional children’s book, although most of the time, she’s waiting upon her beloved fox terrier, Tilly.

More than half of Americans are registered organ donors, signed up to gift organs like kidneys and livers to patients in need of a transplant when they die. However, far fewer people have signed up to donate their brains to biomedical research upon their deaths. At NIH, the Human Brain Collection Core (HBCC) acts as a steadfast steward of this precious and scarce scientific resource, giving the brains of deceased donors a second life as a key driver of life-changing neuropsychiatric research.

Nearly 60 million adults in the U.S. suffer from a psychiatric disorder, and examining the brains of these individuals is indispensable for determining the molecular mechanisms underlying these diseases. Consequently, the HBCC provides invaluable assistance to scientists seeking to improve our understanding and treatment of such conditions. In recognition of World Mental Health Day today, let’s take a glimpse into how the Core is accelerating investigations into the mass of gray and white matter that makes each of us who we are.

In the story of Ali Baba and the Forty Thieves, two magic words were necessary to open the cave where treasure was hidden. At NIH, researchers are applying those same special words, ‘open sesame,’ to unlock a chamber that is similarly difficult to access. In this case, however, it’s the left ventricle of the human heart.

“Enter one of the greatest acronyms in medicine: Open SESAME,” says IRP senior investigator Robert Lederman, M.D., who leads the IRP’s Laboratory of Cardiovascular Intervention. “That’s what we’re doing: opening up space in the heart.”

“My mortal body is indeed a universe of atoms, but I am just an atom in the universe myself,” physicist Richard Feynman once wrote in a poem. Within our own bodily universes, all those atoms tell a story about how our bodies work — and how they sometimes don’t.

IRP Distinguished Investigator Adriaan Bax, Ph.D., has pioneered ways to watch those atoms using nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) methods. This year, he was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society in recognition of his research, which has contributed greatly to our knowledge of how the proteins and nucleic acids that keep our bodies running smoothly are structured, how they move, and how they interact, particularly in relation to diseases caused by their malformations and malfunctions. The Royal Society, which was founded in England in the 1660s, is a fellowship of many of the world’s most eminent scientists and is the oldest scientific academy in continuous existence.

Our cells’ ability to create more of themselves is crucial for many aspects of health, but a cell without DNA can’t do all that much. For that reason, perhaps the most crucial step in cell division is the replication of DNA. IRP Distinguished Investigator Thomas Kunkel, Ph.D., has spent his career trying to understand DNA replication, what happens when the process goes wrong, and what influences the likelihood of mistakes. Earlier this year, he was elected to the National Academy of Sciences (NAS) in recognition of his extensive contributions to this field.

IRP Scientist Has Found New Ways to Wield the Immune System Against Cancer

Over the past twenty or so years, we’ve seen a sea change in many cancer therapies resulting from advances in immunotherapy. Rather than trying to poison cancer cells with chemotherapy or rip apart their DNA with radiation, these treatments help our own bodies attack the disease. As a result, we’ve seen a remarkable reduction in cancer deaths from many types of tumors. 

NIH Distinguished Investigator Giorgio Trinchieri, M.D., has long stood at the forefront of these discoveries. This year, he was elected to the National Academy of Sciences (NAS) for his achievements in identifying the mechanisms regulating the activity of certain classes of immune cells and how the environment around a tumor interacts with the immune system to suppress an immune response to the disease. This includes searching for ways to expand the benefits of immunotherapy to more patients.

IRP’s June Kwon-Chung Elected to National Academy of Sciences for Advances in Mycology

Even as a little girl, NIH Distinguished Investigator June Kwon-Chung, Ph.D., knew she would be a scientist. Seven decades later, she has been elected to the National Academy of Sciences (NAS) for her groundbreaking research on fungal diseases.

“My dream has always been to become a research scientist in the field of biology,” Dr. Kwon-Chung says. “This goes way back to when I was barely out of the toddler stage.” 

As a child growing up in Korea before it split into two separate countries, Dr. Kwon-Chung felt blessed to have parents and teachers who nurtured her interests early. Her participation in her junior high school’s “Biology Club” led her to focus on the study of bacteria as a student at the Ewha Womans University in Seoul, Korea, even though wartime disruptions made scientific study challenging. In 1961, she won a year-long Fulbright Smith-Mundt scholarship to study in the U.S. and chose to attend the University of Wisconsin, where she specialized in mycology, the study of fungi.

For most kids, witnessing a classmate get teased for strange behavior or learning struggles is an unfortunate but common part of life. Growing up, IRP senior investigator Robert Innis, M.D., Ph.D., viewed the situation differently when he observed it during a high school geometry class.

“Some of my classmates were criticizing one student like he was a bad person,” he remembers. “I kept thinking, ‘You can’t blame him. It’s the chemistry in his brain that causes him to act that way. Don’t think you’re so high and mighty. It’s just your chemistry!’”

That interest in brain chemistry and how it relates to normal and abnormal behavior laid the foundation for Dr. Innis’s research in neuropsychiatry and brain imaging. As we observe World Brain Day on July 22, we took the opportunity to talk with Dr. Innis about his research, which uses a technique called positron emission tomography (PET) to measure the levels of various proteins in people’s brains and learn about their function in both healthy states and neuropsychiatric diseases.

As an undergraduate majoring in English, IRP senior investigator W. Marston Linehan, M.D., was fascinated by the complex poetry of 18th-century writer William Blake. But as much as he loved puzzling out the deeper meanings behind literary metaphors and imagery, Dr. Linehan eventually realized he wanted to do work that had more tangible benefits for people. Biology, with its own deep and complex mysteries, fit the bill.

Nearly 40 years later, Dr. Linehan’s pioneering work in the study of genetic forms of kidney cancer has transformed how doctors treat the disease. Over that period, he and his colleagues discovered or co-discovered nine distinct forms of kidney cancer and identified 10 different genes that cause them. These discoveries have provided the basis for targeted therapies and new approaches to treatment and, this year, earned Dr. Linehan the HHS Secretary’s Award for Distinguished Service, the highest honor given by the US government’s Department of Health and Human Services (HHS).

Just as Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde exhibited the extremes of good and bad qualities in a single man, IRP Stadtman Investigator Priyanka Narayan, Ph.D., is showing how a single gene can both protect against and raise the risk for Alzheimer’s disease and other dementias. As we observe Alzheimer’s and Brain Awareness month this June, we talked with Dr. Narayan about her work.

“Our research focuses on understanding fundamental cell biology in brain cells and how genetic factors affecting that biology can predispose individuals to Alzheimer's disease,” Dr. Narayan says. “More recently, we’ve become interested in protective factors that make people more resistant to getting Alzheimer’s disease and other forms of neurodegenerative diseases as well.”

The word ‘stroke,’ attributed to the idea of ‘a stroke of God’s hand,’ was first used in 1599 to describe the sudden seizure, paralysis, and brain damage that was previously called ‘apoplexy.’ It was a fitting analogy. Strokes, which affect nearly 800,000 Americans every year, hit suddenly and terrifyingly, with devastating consequences. Speed is critical to good treatment outcomes, but until recently very little could be done. 

May is Stroke Awareness Month, a time to draw attention to the risks and symptoms of stroke and the new treatments that are helping people recover with fewer lasting effects. We recently spoke with IRP senior scientist Lawrence L. Latour, Ph.D., an expert on brain imaging who leads the Acute Cerebrovascular Diagnostics Unit, a unique partnership between the NIH Intramural Research Program and two hospitals in the metro, D.C., area: Suburban Hospital and Medstar Washington Hospital Center. The collaboration, launched in 2000, aimed to incorporate magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) in examinations of patients experiencing symptoms of stroke. This allowed the clinicians to diagnose patients more easily and then, through imaging at later time points, look at how patients responded to their treatments in order to learn ways to improve therapy.
