Patch It Up, Clinical Center Style
NIH Clinical Center staff wore these colorful patches in the 1970s-80s. They were often designed by employees. Some just identify a department, but most offer depictions of research or heroic struggle or humor. They were often collected and worn on white coats—in 1987, Dorothy Zimmerman in Housekeeping sewed 100 patches on a coat for President Ronald Reagan when he visited. These are just a few of the many that we have in our collection.
