Between fast-food outlets, vending machines, and food trucks — not to mention good old-fashioned home cooking — many people face no shortage of opportunities to eat. But as satisfying as a crisp potato chip or a moist pork chop may be, people with asthma and many other conditions may prefer to resist tasty temptations if it means alleviating some of their symptoms. In a small pilot study, IRP researchers found evidence that abstaining from food for 24 hours could inhibit some of the cellular processes that cause asthmatics’ breathing problems.

Second in the Orloff Award recipient series are Drs. Jay Chung and Stewart Levine for their characterization of the role of DNA-dependent protein kinase (DNA-PK) in dendritic cell function in asthma and for the identification of the role of pharmacological inhibition of DNA-PK as a novel treatment approach for asthma.

At the age of one, Mia Strawser started to experience 105-degree fevers for weeks with no explanation. One of her specialists knew there had to be something “bigger” going on and referred Mia to the NIH's Undiagnosed Diseases Program (UDP). The UDP reviewed Mia’s medical records and recommended she see Dr. Dan Kastner.
