NIH GRADUATE AND PROFESSIONAL SCHOOL FAIR

NIH summer interns (especially those in college) and postbacs, as well as other college students in the D.C. area, are invited to prepare for the next step in their careers by exploring educational programs leading to graduate and professional degrees. More than 100 outstanding colleges and universities from across the United States will be sending representatives of their graduate schools, medical and dental schools, schools of public health, and other biomedically relevant programs to the fair in the hopes of recruiting NIH trainees. The day will also include workshops on getting into graduate and professional school; M.D.-Ph.D. programs; interviewing; and careers in public health, psychology, and dentistry. SUMMER POSTER DAY 2013

Summer interns can share their NIH research and develop their communication and networking skills at Summer Poster Day. Any summer intern (high school, college, medical or dental, or graduate) working in an NIH intramural research group this summer may present. Investigators, staff scientists, and scientific administrators can make particularly important contributions to Summer Poster Day by visiting posters and engaging their authors in discussion. WALS RETURNS IN SEPTEMBER

The 2013–2014 Wednesday Afternoon Lecture Series (WALS) starts on a Monday (September 9) with Cori Bargmann from The Rockefeller University (New York), who will talk about brain mapping. Then the Wednesday schedule resumes on Wednesday, September 11: Jeffrey Esko from the University of California, San Diego, School of Medicine (La Jolla, Calif.), will present “Proteoglycans: Arbiters of Lipoprotein Metabolism.” The 2013–2014 schedule is coming together and, when completed, will be posted at http://wals.od.nih.gov.

THE ANITA B. ROBERTS FALL LECTURE

Wei Yang, section chief of NIDDK’s Laboratory of Molecular Biology, will give the fall seminar honoring the memory of Anita B. Roberts. Her talk, “Seeing is Believing: Functional Biology at Atomic Resolution,” is sponsored by the NIH Women Scientist Advisors Committee and the Office of Research on Women’s Health. This seminar series highlights outstanding research achievements of women scientists in the Intramural Research Program at the NIH. The series is dedicated to the memory of Anita B. Roberts, former chief of NCI’s Laboratory of Cell Regulation and Carcinogenesis, honoring her role as an exceptional mentor and scientist. “INFLAMMATION, MICROBIOTA, AND CANCER” SYMPOSIUM

NCI’s Center for Cancer Research is hosting this two-day national symposium, which features recent advances in the field. It promises to be an exciting forum for discussion and debate on the current understanding of cancer and inflammation. Session topics include inflammation and microbiota; cancer, microbiota, and metabolism; miRNAs, cancer, and inflammation; and cancer, inflammation, and immunity. SYMPOSIUM ON CARDIOVASCULAR REGENERATIVE MEDICINE

September 25–26, 2013

NHLBI’s fifth Symposium on Cardiovascular Regenerative Medicine will bring together experts in basic stem-cell biology and experts in clinical cardiovascular medicine to discuss the emerging basic science, preclinical animal models, and potential clinical applications. Topics will include general and cardiovascular stem cells, clinical applications, tissue engineering, developmental biology, and large-scale proteomics and metabolomics as a tool to identify new clinical deliverables. NATIONAL GRADUATE STUDENT RESEARCH CONFERENCE (NGSRC)

October 6–8, 2013

This annual two-day event will introduce 90 advanced graduate students in the sciences to the NIH Intramural Research Program. These future leaders of the biomedical research community will share their own cutting-edge research and learn about scientific advances being made at NIH. NIH investigators will have the opportunity to recruit conference participants as postdoctoral fellows. Conference attendees are selected competitively from a pool of more than 500 applicants. In the past, attendees have been racially and ethnically diverse, represented most states, and come from a variety of prestigious institutions of higher education. The NGSRC agenda includes career and professional development workshops, a panel of former NIH trainees discussing their career trajectories, and poster sessions. NIH investigators and current postdoctoral fellows are encouraged to visit the posters to discuss potential collaborations and new research directions and learn first-hand about novel techniques and approaches that could enhance their investigations.
