G. Burroughs Mider Lecture: The Microscope as a Tool for Disease Discovery

to

Dr. Elaine Jaffe

Lipsett Amphitheater, NIH Clinical Center (Building 10); and and NIH videocast

IRP senior investigator Elaine Jaffe, M.D., will present the 2025 G. Burroughs Mider Lecture, established in 1968 in honor of the first NIH director of laboratories and clinics. The G. Burroughs Mider Lecture is presented by an NIH intramural scientist to recognize and appreciate outstanding contributions to biomedical research.

Dr. Jaffe's lecture will briefly review the historical background of the modern classification of lymphomas. The contemporary classification of lymphomas begins with traditional pathological observations, but defines diseases based on an integration of histological features, the nature of the tumor cells as they relate to the normal immune system, genomic findings, and finally clinical presentation and course. The lecture will illustrate how observations made in the course of daily practice lead to the discovery of new diseases, and how these discoveries impact clinical management.
