A Deep Dive Into the Brain’s Alert System

Published:

Throughout the day, our brains are constantly transitioning between periods of mellow relaxation and moments of high alertness and arousal. Jennifer Panlilio, a postdoctoral fellow in the Intramural Research Program at the National Institutes of Health, is putting tiny fish through their paces to learn about the brain areas and chemicals that control that process. What she learns could one day be used to help people with conditions like anxiety and depression that ratchet up or tamp down arousal.
