There are approximately 1,100 Principal Investigators actively engaged in biomedical or behavioral research on our National Institutes of Health (NIH) campuses. In a similar fashion to universities and academic medical centers, Principal Investigators in the Intramural Research Program (IRP) are tenured or tenure-track scientists directing independent research programs with distinct scientific agendas. They also have a strong commitment to mentoring and training the next generation of scientists.
Although each Principal Investigator is organizationally aligned with a particular Institute or Center, they may find that their closest collaborators and intellectual partners are members of other NIH Institutes. Their collaborations, though, are not limited to the NIH campus; many of the IRP’s Principal Investigators work extensively with scientific colleagues worldwide.
Many of our researchers are world-renowned experts in their respective disciplines. Our Principal Investigators have authored some of the most highly cited papers in the biomedical sciences, serve on the editorial boards of top-tier scientific and medical journals, and have generated licenses and patents yielding nearly $100 million in annual royalties. Their discoveries are on the cutting edge of science and medicine, with many of their findings having direct applications to clinical care.
Working in research settings, in clinics, out in the field, on nearly every continent and every day, our Investigators are constantly advancing the state of biomedical science, with the goal of changing lives for the better.
Soon, you will be able to access individual profiles of our Principal Investigators from this page.
