Laboratory Chief, NIAID

The National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) Division of Intramural Research (DIR) is seeking an outstanding scientist in the area of HIV research to serve as a laboratory chief in DIR in Bethesda, Maryland.
DIR is at the forefront of research in basic immunology and its clinical application in immunologic, allergic, and infectious diseases. DIR’s purpose is to make scientific discoveries that lead to the generation of new knowledge that enables development of new vaccines, diagnostics, and therapeutics to improve human health. The laboratory chief will lead a large group of scientists who are currently located in the Laboratory of Immunoregulation (LIR) and the Laboratory of Molecular Microbiology (LMM). The two laboratories are composed of an interactive and collaborative group of basic and clinical senior investigators, trainees, technicians, contractors, and administrative staff, who will be merged into a single laboratory to be headed by the selectee for this position.
LIR researchers conduct basic, translational, and clinical studies of the cellular and molecular mechanisms regulating the human immune response in health and disease. Overall, LIR’s research portfolio is a model of the bench-to-bedside and bedside-to-bench approach to biomedical research. As such, LIR operates a state-of-the-art HIV clinic and inpatient program at the NIH Clinical Center, which serves as an international hub for AIDS clinical research as well as an international resource for the training of HIV clinicians in the exploration of new treatment options and care of HIV-infected patients. Although the principal emphasis of LIR is understanding the immunopathogenesis of HIV infection, LIR also investigates other infectious diseases of major public health importance as part of NIAID’s emerging infectious diseases portfolio.
LMM scientists conduct basic research on murine and primate retroviruses (e.g., HIV, SIV, SHIV), with the principal focus of research being HIV-1. Fundamental investigations of viral gene regulation, protein structure and function, and particle assembly are integrated with studies of immunologic protection and viral pathogenesis. Non-human primate models of HIV-1 are used to assess novel treatment regimens and vaccine approaches to prevent disease.
The laboratory chief will have independent resources to conduct laboratory research and/or translational and clinical research, as appropriate. Candidates must hold a Ph.D., D.V.M, M.D., or equivalent doctoral degree in a relevant field. The ideal candidate will have a highly successful track record in leading a strong independent research program that approaches important questions in the biology and pathogenesis of HIV disease. Committed resources include laboratory space, support personnel, and an allocated annual budget to cover services, supplies and salaries. The selected candidate will also oversee shared infrastructure and resources of the laboratory and supervise the other principal investigators in both LIR and LMM, all of whom have independent research programs. A laboratory chief in DIR is equivalent to a department chair in a university or medical school. Salary is dependent on experience, qualifications, and accomplishments.
